 The central processing unit (CPU) is the brains of your computer. It handles all the instructions you give your computer.


The motherboard is the big piece that everything else plugs into. It has sockets for the CPU, memory, and expansion cards. It also has connectors for the power supply, storage devices, and peripherals.


Random access memory (RAM) is where your computer stores temporary information. When you open a program, it loads from storage into RAM. The more RAM you have, the more programs you can have open at the same time without slowing down your computer.


Hard disk drives (HDDs) and solid state drives (SSDs) are where your computer stores all its long-term information. Your operating system, apps, and documents all live on your storage drive. HDDs are cheaper and have more capacity, but SSDs are faster and more durable.

Each category of device has its own set of specialized skills and functions. For example, a keyboard is an input device that is used to input text and data into a computer. A monitor is an output device that displays text and images on a screen. A hard drive is a storage device that stores data on a spinning disk.
